Celebrating 40 Years: Humanae Vitae Minimize

July 25, 2008 marked the 40th Anniversary of Pius VI’s prophetic encyclical, Humanae Vitae!  The truth and beauty of the gift of fertility is magnificently presented in this authoritative papal document, and has been the touch point of Catholic sexual ethics for decades.  Oftentimes, the true freedom that Humanae Vitae promotes has been misunderstood and even rejected, especially because of its strong stance against the use of artificial contraception.  Particularly in the United States, it seemed that the “sexual revolution” almost obliterated the life-giving message of Humanae Vitae.

Yet, even in the wake of that storm, the legacy of Paul VI lives on!  Sexual morality is steadily increasing, thanks to the work of faithful theologians and a “New Sexual Revolution” of chastity among teens.  John Paul II’s Theology of the Body has also prepared a new generation to lovingly embrace the Church’s teachings on human sexuality.

On March 8, 2008, the Respect Life Office presented a major event, "Humanae Vitae: Celebrating 40 Years." Renowned theologian Dr. Peter Kreeft, Chicago Archbiship Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. and Ms. Deirdre McQuade of the USCCB Pro Life Secretariat presented magnificently. With the rampant lack of respect for sexuality and human dignity in our society today, there is no better way to combat the culture of death than through the light of truth.  Empower yourself to carry the Gospel message of life and love to all you know by studying Humanae Vitae. You will find here several resources to assist you, including a transcript of Cardinal George’s talk from the March 8th Conference.
